Parcel Packing Guide: How to Prepare Your Items for Safe Delivery
When sending a parcel, good packaging is essential to make sure your items arrive safely and on time. During transit, parcels are often handled multiple times as they move through sorting centres and delivery networks. For this reason, it’s important that every parcel is packed securely and correctly.
If you’re preparing a parcel but aren’t sure where to begin, the following packing tips will help ensure your items are well protected throughout their journey.
Choose the Right Box
Selecting the correct box is one of the most important steps when packing a parcel. The box should be strong and appropriately sized for the contents inside. Trying to force large items into a small box can weaken the structure and increase the risk of the box splitting during transit.
Make sure your box is sturdy enough to support the weight of the contents without bending or tearing.
Wrap Items Individually
If you’re sending more than one item in a parcel, it’s important to wrap each item separately. Materials such as bubble wrap, packing paper, or protective foam help prevent items from knocking into each other.
For example, if you’re shipping fragile items like mugs, plates, or glassware, individual wrapping will help prevent scratching, chipping, or breakage during transit.
Cushion the Contents
Once your items are wrapped, ensure they are placed in the centre of the box and surrounded by cushioning materials. Padding should be added on all sides to stop the contents from moving around inside the box.
Packing materials such as bubble wrap, packing peanuts, or crumpled paper can help absorb shocks and reduce the risk of damage.
Don’t Rely on Manufacturer Packaging
Many items are sold in original retail packaging that may not be suitable for shipping on its own. While this packaging is designed for display or storage, it may not provide enough protection during delivery.
For this reason, it’s always best to place items in a strong outer box with additional protective materials.
Seal Your Parcel Securely
Strong packing tape should always be used to seal your parcel properly. Brown parcel tape is typically the most reliable option for securing boxes.
Make sure all openings and edges of the box are sealed, and consider using multiple layers of tape for extra strength and security.
Reusing Boxes
Reusing packaging is a great way to reduce waste, but if you are using an old box, make sure that any previous shipping labels or barcodes are completely removed. Old labels can cause confusion during the sorting process or lead to delivery errors.
Label Fragile or Directional Items
If your parcel contains fragile items or non-solid goods, adding an “This Way Up” or arrow label can help ensure the parcel is handled correctly during transit.
While this does not guarantee special handling, it provides helpful guidance for those processing the parcel.
Ensure the Address Label is Clear
Your address label should be clearly written and easy to read. If you are writing the label by hand, using capital letters can improve readability and reduce the risk of errors during sorting.
Make sure all address details are included and correct before sending your parcel.
Add a Backup Address Label
For extra peace of mind, it’s a good idea to place a duplicate address label inside the parcel. If the external label becomes damaged or detached, this additional label can help couriers identify the correct delivery address.
